Obituary for Billy H. Guinn

A funeral service for Billy H. Guinn, age 88, of Jacksonville, is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 with visitation at 9 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Rev. Joel McMahon and Rev. Doug Wintermute officiating. Mr. Guinn will be laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemtery in Rusk. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mr. Guinn passed away Monday, December 23, 2019 in Tyler.
Billy was born August 17, 1931 in Rusk to Frazier and Mable (Holcomb) Guinn.
Mr. Guinn received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Masters in Education from Stephen F. Austin University. He taught for one year before he was drafted into the US Army, serving in the Korean War from 1953-1955. When he returned, he continued to execute his brilliant teaching path at JHS. Mr. Guinn was instrumental in implementing the Anatomy Curriculum into the Public-School System in the State of Texas at the High School Level and initiated the famous “Biology Fair” at JHS. Mr. Guinn received recognition several times as “Teacher of the Year” and in 2014, he was honored as one of the “Stars” of Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Education Foundation Gala.
After 36 years of teaching at JHS, he retired in 1986 and began teaching at Jacksonville College until 1988. In retirement, Mr. Guinn served as Chairman of the American Heart Association in Cherokee County and over many years, he assisted many in the Medical profession as well; identifying specific plants, snakes and toxins which patients may have been exposed to. He also put his knowledge of animals to good use as an expert cattle breeder and rancher. Mr. Guinn and his wife, Bettye were members of First United Methodist Church since 1953 where he continued to use his excellent teaching talents by leading the Wesley Sunday School class for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Justin McCullough.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 69 years, Bettye (Mercer) Guinn; children, Gary Guinn and wife Cindy of Hideaway, Karen Adams and husband Kelly of Jacksonville and Jan Schmitt and husband Mick of Jacksonville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Barry Guinn, Clint and Sheli Guinn, Brett and Allie Guinn, Kyle Adams, Jacob and Kristi McCullough, and Cody and Sharae Schmitt. His great grandchildren are: Brooke Guinn, Jack Guinn, Colt Guinn, Alliann Guinn, Elliott Guinn, Eleanor Guinn, McKenna Adams, Blake McCullough, Xyleigh Schmitt and Xade Schmitt.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Barry Guinn, Clint Guinn, Brett Guinn, Kyle Adams, Jacob McCullough, Cody Schmitt and Dr. Archie Underwood, former student and lifelong friend. Honorary pallbearers are John Alexander, John Mark Lester, Kent Westbrook, Felipe Salazar, The Wesley Bible Class and Ushers of the First United Methodist Church.
